NGC 2960 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Water Snake south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 214 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 549 .
The object was discovered on March 4, 1826 by the astronomer John Herschel .
