NGC 2939 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 144 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 105,000 light-years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2913 , NGC 2940 , IC 548 .
The supernovae SN 2009ao and SN 2011cf (Type II) were observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on January 18, 1784 .
