Arp 142 ( VV 316 ) is a merging pair of galaxies in the constellation Hydra , which is about 300 million light years away from the Milky Way . It consists of a galaxy , NGC 2936 , and an elliptical galaxy , NGC 2937 . The former is very deformed and has extensive tidal arms that contain several star formation areas. In the visual and near infrared , the appearance of NGC 2936 is that of a bird's head with its core as the eye and the tidal arms as the neck. The appearance of the system shows certain similarities to Arp 125 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies with emanating material .
