NGC 2966 is an active bar-spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Sextant south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 85 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 55,000 ly. Together with NGC 2962 and PGC 27248 , it forms the NGC 2966 group .

The type II supernova SN 2011in was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 16, 1884 by Édouard Stephan .
