NGC 2986 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Hydra , an estimated 119 million light-years from the Milky Way 's center. It forms an optical galaxy pair with the approximately 13.5 mag bright galaxy ESO 566-04 in the background .
At the beginning of December 1999, the Type Ia supernova SN 1999gh was discovered in the galaxy .
The object was discovered on March 10, 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
