NGC 3001 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Air Pump in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 100 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 90,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there is a. a. the galaxy NGC 2997 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2010hg was observed here.
The object was discovered on March 30, 1835 by the astronomer John Herschel .
