The Basilica of Our Lady of the Snow or Manjumatha Basilica is a Roman Catholic church in Pallippuram in the Ernakulam district of the southern Indian state of Kerala . The church of the diocese of Kottapuram is consecrated under the patronage of Our Lady of the Snow to the Mother of God and has the title of a minor basilica .
history
Construction of the church began with the construction of the Pallipuram Fort in 1503. The Portuguese fort was the first European fortification in India . The consecration of the Marienkirche took place in 1507. In 1577 it became a parish church .
During the Mysore campaign around 1789/90 under Tipu Sultan against Travancore , most of the Christian and Hindu religious buildings in the region were destroyed. According to legend , the church was hidden from the attackers by snow (or fog). Due to the rising flood of the nearby river Periyar , the attackers had to withdraw weakly. The Church's patronage was then changed to Our Lady of the Snow .
The church was renovated in 1931 and 2006. The church was opened in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the minor basilica .
