The Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry e. V. (BTW) is the umbrella association of the German tourism industry with headquarters in Berlin and offices in Berlin and Brussels. It was founded in 1995.

Association work

The main topics of the association are tourism in Germany , mobility, climate protection, digitization, transport infrastructure, consumer protection as well as tax and labor policy. Members include a. Transport companies (including Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn), airport operators, hotel chains and tour operators, representatives from the tourism marketing sector and tourism associations.

Michael Frenzel, former CEO of TUI AG, has been BTW President since November 23, 2012 .

Events and projects

Every year in autumn, the BTW organizes the tourism summit in the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, an industry meeting on current affairs and future topics. Around 500 representatives from business, politics and the media take part in the event every year.

Together with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy , the BTW commissioned the German Institute for Economic Research to recalculate the economic importance of tourism. The results of the study are available in short and long versions for 2015. In another study carried out in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the IW Cologne under the title "Development Factor Tourism", the BTW deals with the effects that tourism from Germany has in developing and emerging countries.

The association has been awarding the start-up prize "The Golden Suitcase" since 2018. The first winner was the startup Comtravo, which specializes in booking business trips, and CamperBoys prevailed in 2019.

The association also provides information on how the companies and associations in the sector are committed to sustainability. Its internet portal includes, among other things, company standards, consumer information, new products, aid projects and quality seals.
