The ERGO travel insurance AG (formerly ERV - European Travel Insurance AG ) is an international company headquartered in Munich . It is a subsidiary of ERGO Group AG based in Düsseldorf . In the tourism sector, she cooperates with travel companies such as Thomas Cook , DER Touristik , TUI and Deutsche Bahn . It sells travel protection products such as travel cancellation and travel health insurance as well as travel insurance packages.
history
Max von Engel founded the European goods and luggage insurance company in Budapest in 1907 with the participation of Munich Re . The main business purpose was luggage insurance. In the same year a branch was set up in Berlin, and in 1919 the branch was converted into an independent insurance company in Germany.

In 1974 the company was renamed Europäische Reiseversicherung AG.
In 1989/90, ERV took over Touristik Assekuranz Service GmbH (TAS) and founded Mercur Assistance AG Holding, ERV's emergency call center.
Starting in 1994, the company gradually built up its own international network of subsidiaries and associated companies and foreign branches.
In May 2006, ERV was named the best financial service provider in Germany, and in November of the same year, ERV received the German Tourism Industry Innovation Award.
On January 1, 2009, ERV moved within Munich Re to the ERGO insurance group . With this integration, a “Travel” competence center was set up within the ERGO Group.
In May 2019, ERV was renamed ERGO Reiseversicherung and thus the travel business area was integrated into the Ergo brand identity nationally and internationally.
