history

The history of Monacia-d'Aullène is strongly influenced by the tradition of the shepherds and is closely linked to the town of Aullène. Both belonged to the historical Alta Rocca area (not identical to today's administrative units of the same name).

Monacia became an independent municipality by imperial decree in 1864 from a hamlet in the municipality of Aullène . Between 1880 and 1889 the land between Monaccia and Aullène was divided. The interdependencies in land ownership still exist today, both in private property and in the property of the municipalities.

Until the First World War , the inhabitants of Aullène migrated with their animals from the mountains to the pastures in the coastal area during the winter months. This was the so-called hivernage or l'impiaghiera (overwintering). In summer they moved back up into the mountains to the so-called l'estive or a muntanera, if possible before the appearance of mosquitoes as carriers of malaria. Between Monacia-d'Aullène, the summer village, and Aullène is Giannuccio (Ghjannucciu), a hamlet that used to be just a simple stop in the Cagna Mountains on the shepherds' walk with their flocks. You will therefore find the same families in all three places.

The buildings in the center of Monaccia around the church are traditional and rural with houses made of granite stones. Giannuccio is the starting point for hikers who can start their ascent to the mountain L'Omu di Cagna here.
