The Tank & Rast GmbH highway , based in Bonn , is a service company that the concession for nearly all motorway service stations and its filling stations in Germany holds; the fuel -Vertriebsrechte to the majority of service stations are in an auction by the Company to lease forgive and were last usually a contract period of four years. It also operates its own gas stations and truck stops and offers related services.

Activities & corporate structure

With 410 rest stops, 360 petrol stations and 50 hotels , Tank & Rast is the largest service company of its kind in Germany. It holds 90 percent of the concessions for ancillary operations on the motorways . The Tank & Rast Group posted sales of 1,205 million euros in 2016 .

Tank & Rast has four business areas:

Typically, Tank & Rast does not operate the petrol stations and service areas itself, but leases them to private tenants . They receive licenses from Tank & Rast and are obliged to adhere to minimum standards in terms of market presence, appearance, range and quality; the operators who have been awarded the contract for the operation allocate the costs to the fuel prices and product prices in the sales area and are therefore almost always higher-priced compared to the offers at street filling stations. Around 15 businesses are run by Tank & Rast as own businesses.

history

Serways branch at the Fränkische Schweiz-Ost service area

Tank & Rast was founded in 1994. Its predecessors were the former federally owned companies, the Society for Subsidiaries of the Federal Motorways (GfN, founded in 1951) and the Ostdeutsche Autobahntankstellengesellschaft mbH (OATG).

In 1998 the privatization took place with the political guidelines:

  • Preservation of the tried and tested system "driving, refueling and resting on the motorway" for road users,
  • Preservation of the medium-sized tenant structure and their entrepreneurial freedom,
  • Preservation of the variety of offers at petrol stations and consideration of the interests of medium-sized petrol station operators,
  • Avoidance of monopolies .
Headquarters in Bonn

The then Transport Minister Matthias Wissmann ( CDU ) was responsible for the sale to Lufthansa (30.6 percent) and private equity companies, namely Apax and the Allianz subsidiary Allianz Capital Partners . The proceeds amounted to 1.2 billion DM . After months of negotiations, the privatization contract was signed in Cologne on October 29, 1998 , just two days after Franz Müntefering ( SPD ) was sworn in as Minister of Transport. Nevertheless, the rumor persisted for a long time that Müntefering and the red-green federal government had pushed ahead with privatization.

From late 2004 to June 2007, the British private equity firm Terra Firma Capital Partners was the sole owner of Tank & Rast. In 2004 the company took over Tank & Rast for approx. 1.1 billion euros. In June 2007, the infrastructure fund involved RREEF of Deutsche Bank Company for 1.2 billion euros at 50 percent.

After completing a pilot phase that began in 2004, Tank & Rast expanded the Serways service station brand to 80 locations in 2007 . In 2009, 170 of the 390 Tank & Rast locations were Serways branches. In 2009, the company bought the tank and service station operator Axxe from the Metro retail group. In January 2011 the company opened its first truck stop in Rheda-Wiedenbrück on the A 2 . Around 1.5 million euros were invested in equipping the truck stop.

In August 2015, Tank & Rast was acquired by a consortium for 3.5 billion euros. The consortium includes the Allianz subsidiary Allianz Capital Partners, the Munich Re subsidiary MEAG , the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and the Canadian infrastructure fund Borealis Infrastructure .

Tank & Rast's business model is repeatedly criticized. The FAZ reported on August 18, 2018 that the Federal Association of Consumer Centers accused the service station group Tank & Rast of riping off customers. With 460 petrol stations and 410 rest stops, the company now has a virtual monopoly and, according to the Federal Association of Consumer Centers, the forced situation is being exploited by customers. These allegations relate to the company Sanifair, but one accuses Tank & Rast of the sometimes very high prices, which on a sample basis were more than double the supermarket price.

Sanifair

Companies

A subsidiary of the company, Sanifair , is responsible for the toilets and has developed its own concept to turn the previously free service into a source of income for Tank & Rast. A toilet usage fee of 70 cents is charged ( 1 Euro in Hanover and Dortmund main train station ), of which 50 cents are offset against purchases in Tank & Rast companies. The credit is only granted for travel needs and restaurant consumption; Fuels are excluded. When it was introduced nationwide in 2003, visiting the toilet with 50 cents, which was fully offset, was still cost-neutral for the customer who bought it. Sanifair is available at around 300 motorway rest stops in all federal states except Berlin and Bremen (the state of Bremen has no motorway rest areas ). Drivers can also find Sanifair toilets at some of the AXXE-branded gas stations and service stations.

The first Sanifair toilet system has been in a shopping center since 2008. In 2010, a Sanifair toilet facility opened in Hanover Central Station , in 2011 a Sanifair facility was opened in Bremen Central Station and in 2013 in Oldenburg Central Station . There are now other locations in some McDonald’s branches , at some OMV petrol stations as well as in the Leverkusen Rathausgalerie , at the Euro-Rastpark in Schweitenkirchen , in the immediate vicinity of Hanover's main train station in the Ernst-August-Galerie and in the Schlossarkaden in Braunschweig , the palace courtyards in Oldenburg and in the Stern Center in Potsdam . These systems run with each other and separately from the previous tank & rest system, i.e. H. Vouchers can only be redeemed on site and therefore not at the fuel and rest stops or at the alternative locations. With a euro key , the toilets are also available for disabled people .

The Tank & Rast subsidiary has also had its first toilet facilities abroad since 2008, each with a location in Austria (McDonald's in Salzburg ) and Hungary (OMV in Karácsond ). Both these and the other locations outside the Tank & Rast network are part of a pilot project.

Criticism of the business model

On December 5, 2016 , the consumer magazine Caution, Consumer Trap of the ARD critically examined the business model of Sanifair and quoted from the privatization agreement "Tank & Rast will endeavor to ensure the free use of sanitary facilities all year round." reports on Sanifair's business practices. The RBB also reported critically on March 26, 2018 about the so-called Sanifair receipt system. According to this, almost half of Germans rarely or never redeem these vouchers. That was the result of a representative survey by the market research institute INSA on behalf of the rbb consumer magazine Super.Markt .

Electromobility

Tank & Rast has been supporting the federal government's e-mobility initiative on German motorways since autumn 2015 . Fast charging stations are set up and each equipped with a CHAdeMO , a CCS and a type 2 connection.

At Tank & Rast, charging is free in the beginning. At partner companies such as Serways, EnBW or Innogy operates for a fee.
