The Euro key is a 1986 from the CBF Darmstadt - Club Disabled and their friends in Darmstadt and the surrounding area e. V. - locking system introduced in many (primarily German-speaking) countries , which enables physically impaired people to independently and free of charge access to handicapped-friendly sanitary facilities and facilities with a standard key , e.g. B. on motorway and train station toilets , but also for public toilets in pedestrian zones, museums or authorities (sometimes in special elevators to ensure accessibility). It fits all over Europe, but mainly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In its directory “The Locus” from 2017, the CBF names 12,000 toilet locations. A complete directory does not exist.

The Euro key is a reversible key , the handle (shaft) of which has identically arranged notches and recessed bores and can therefore be inserted into the lock on both sides around its longitudinal axis.

It is also occasionally used for access to rest rooms for the disabled or elevator systems. Changing rooms can also be reached with it.

Locations

A list of the registered systems that can be used with the Euro key appears under the paid title “The Locus” ( ISBN 978-3-00-054040-0 ). The fifth edition of 2017 lists 12,000 locations of disabled toilets . The national operators of the system keep supplementary lists.

In the UK, there is a similar approach with a different key, the Radar NKS Key . NKS stands for National Key Scheme. This key is also intended for certain groups of disabled people, including wheelchair users and ostomy patients . There are more than 9,000 plants equipped with this system.
