Maurus Xaverius Herbst (civil Florian Johann Friedrich Herbst ; born September 14, 1701 in Pleinfeld , † April 4, 1757 in Abenberg ) was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the Plankstetten monastery .

Life

Herbst was born in Pleinfeld as the son of the Prince-Bishop's customs officer Franz Herbst († 1731) and Anna Maria Clara, daughter of the Kastner of the Sandsee office, Florian Gulden. His first name Florian should go back to the name of his grandfather. It is known from his childhood that his hometown Pleinfeld was under French occupation for three days during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 and that the imperial troops that were quartered in the village had to retreat. One of the soldiers took the young autumn with him. He didn't find his way back to his family until three days later.

Herbst's family moved to Berching . He spent his high school with the Jesuits in Ingolstadt and Neuburg an der Donau . He joined the Plankstetten Abbey in 1719. He took the religious name Maurus and in 1750 added Xaverius to this out of veneration for the Jesuit missionary. In 1720 he made his profession . 1726 was made after studying philosophy and theology at the monastery Plankstetten and michelfeld abbey the priesthood . He became chaplain of the monastery parish. On September 24, 1742, Maurus Xaverius was elected abbot and consecrated on September 30. In 1742 he was also elected abbot of the Beilngries monastery . In 1745 he founded a rosary fraternity .

Herbst died in 1757 at the age of 56 in the Marienburg Abbey near Abenberg, where he wanted to exorcise a nun . He was buried in the church in Plankstetten, where his bones were lifted in 1921 . His grave is now at the foot of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the cloister chapel.

In the diocese of Eichstätt there is a certain veneration of saints around Maurus Xaverius, as several sick healings are attributed to him, he is said to have predicted secularization and he allegedly had the gift of soul observation .

A kindergarten and a street in his hometown of Pleinfeld have been named after him. A street in Plankstetten is also named after him.
