Course of the Altmühl: The Altmühlfranken region lies along the river between the source and Eichstätt

The region along the Altmühl , which belongs to Middle Franconia, is called Altmühlfranken . It is part of the districts of Ansbach and Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . The Franconian Lake District and the eastern part of the Altmühltal are also included in the region . The term "Altmühlfranken" was coined by the Nuremberg art historian Ernst Eichhorn .

The Altmühl rises near Burgbernheim, northwest of Ansbach . It flows via Leutershausen , Herrieden and Ornbau to Gunzenhausen . In the upper Altmühltal , the river passes Markt Berolzheim , Treuchtlingen and Pappenheim before flowing into Solnhofen in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt .

Barrows from the Hallstatt period indicate early settlement, later it was the borderland of the Roman Empire on the Limes . Today the region lies between the major cities of Nuremberg , Ingolstadt and Augsburg and is characterized by rural areas.

Planned district of Altmühlfranken

Since 2010, the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district has been promoting the brand name “altmühlfranken”. Since the unification of the two former districts of Weißenburg and Gunzenhausen and the city of Weißenburg was accompanied by tensions and discussions in the population in the course of the regional reform in 1972 , some of which still have an impact today, the term Altmühlfranken is intended to give the residents of the district the opportunity to express themselves to identify more strongly with the region. For this purpose, the existing subject area that deals with regional marketing at the local district office was named "Altmühlfranken Future Initiative" .

District administrator Gerhard Wägemann brought the idea into play of renaming the previous district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen to the district of Altmühlfranken due to the possible stronger community ties. After the license plate liberalization in Gunzenhausen, the GUN, which was valid until the district amalgamation , would be reintroduced and DON , HIP and EIH would also be possible due to the places that were incorporated from there at that time, Wägemann had the license plate variant AF reserved with the Bavarian state government . This leads to divided opinions among the population. In a non-representative online survey, 83 percent voted in favor of keeping WUG as a license plate and Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen as the district name, only 17% voted for Altmühlfranken.

Of the GUN , EIH , HIP and DON labels that were made possible again with the license plate liberalization , GUN was reintroduced on February 28, 2013 by the decision of District Administrator Wägemann .
