geography

Geographical location

The municipality of Mainstockheim is located in the western part of the Kitzingen district in the Maindreieck directly on the Main. Mainstockheim can be easily reached via the A 7, A 3 and the Kitzingen train connection.

Neighboring communities

Natural location

Mainstockheim and its district are located in two natural areas, both of which are part of the main unit group Mainfränkische Platten . The place itself is located in the low-precipitation Kitzinger Main Valley , the district protrudes into the higher plateaus in the southern Main Triangle .

history

The name Main-stock-heim refers to the time of the Franconian conquest around 800 AD.

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1140 when the Ebrach monastery was acquired.

The oldest settlement core in the north of the place are the houses around the former Gumbertuskirche. It can be recognized today by its baroque roof turret. This was followed by the emergence of a second settlement center around the fortified Jakobskirche, today's Protestant parish church. Only after the Thirty Years War did the two town centers gradually grow together.

In 1500 Ebrach Monastery established a monastery office. Since then there has been a ferry connection across the Main, which is still in operation today, and which enabled the direct route to Ebrach.

Mainstockheim was administered as a Ganerbendorf by the Ganerbegemeinschaft of the Margraves of Ansbach, the Ebrach Abbey and the Lords of Fuchs. The rule in the village was laid down in writing. The agreement was renewed in 1549. The communal administration continued until the place came to Bavaria after the secularization in 1806. After a short period of belonging to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg from 1810 to 1814, Mainstockheim was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Jewish life in Mainstockheim dates back to the 16th century, when a local Jewish resident was mentioned in 1594. Jewish families had lived in the village since at least the 18th century and had already built the first synagogue (year of construction unknown). On the building that is now the Catholic Church, a plaque commemorates the persecution and murder of the Jewish residents in the Shoah .

Mainstockheim has been part of the Kitzingen administrative community since the municipal reform in 1978.

Foundation of the coat of arms: Mainstockheim has had a coat of arms since the 16th century. A coat of arms verifiable in the village rules of the 16th century was included in today's coat of arms. It was confirmed by the government of Lower Franconia on June 23, 1971. The colors red and silver are the colors of Franconia . The wave bar in green is an indication of the geographical location on the Main with the direct ferry to Albertshofen. The red rhizome in silver stands for the suffix -stock.

Community partnerships

Mainstockheim has had a partnership with the community of Oehna in the district of Teltow-Fläming in the state of Brandenburg since 1991 .

Culture and sights

St. Jakobus in Mainstockheim
Former synagogue in Mainstockheim

Architectural monuments

St. James

The parish church of St. Jakobus d. Ä. shows traces of former military strength. Serious changes took place in the sense of the margrave style .

Old graveyard

It connects directly to St. James. The rows of graves are terraced and numerous old tombstones speak of impermanence.

Former synagogue

The street “An der Synagoge” already points to the building. In 1836 a new synagogue was built in Hauptstrasse 213 (today An der Synagoge 9 ) with windows in the characteristic arched style of the 1830s. The inventory of the old synagogue was taken over. The parish hall, the mikveh and the Israelite elementary school were in the same building . In 1938 the interior was destroyed in the November pogrom and the Jewish community ceased to exist in the turmoil of the Nazi era. After 1945 the building served as accommodation for refugees. In the 1950s it was bought by the St. Gumbert Church Foundation of the Catholic branch community of Mainstockheim.

St. Gumbertus

The church building is now privately owned. It was converted into a residential building in 1817. Only the roof turret and the clock remind of the former church.

Ebracher Hof

The Ebrach abbot Johannes von Dressel had the official court built between 1618 and 1630. The builder is not known. An impressive garden was built between 1727 and 1734 under Abbot Wilhelm Sölner von Ebrach. Due to the secularization , the building fell to the Electorate of Bavaria in 1806. Just one year later, it went into private hands and changed hands several times.

In 1961, Gabriele Brandner's parents bought the Ebracher Hof. The system was in poor condition. After numerous renovations and careful alterations, the Ebracher Hof retirement home was built here.

Economy and Infrastructure

Viticulture

Mainstockheim is now an important wine-growing area in the Franconian wine-growing region . There is a vineyard around the village, the wine has been marketed under the name Mainstockheimer Hofstück since the 1970s. Mainstockheim is part of the MainSüden area, until 2017 the winemakers were grouped together in the Maindreieck area. The shell limestone soils with a Keuper layer around Mainstockheim are also suitable for growing wine, as is the location in the Maingau climate zone, which is one of the warmest in Germany.

The people around Mainstockheim have been involved in viticulture since the early Middle Ages . The Franconian settlers probably brought the vine to the Main in the 7th century. In Mainstockheim, viticulture is associated with St. Gumbertus, the symbolic figure of the Mainstockheimer. In the Middle Ages, the region was part of the largest contiguous wine-growing region in the Holy Roman Empire. The people mostly operated part-time viticulture for self-sufficiency , at the same time export centers were already emerging, especially along the Main. Above all, the Ebrach monastery was involved in viticulture and sold its products through the local estate.

Viticulture experienced a major decline after secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. Above all, locations with less favorable climatic conditions were completely abandoned. In addition, the emergence of pests such as phylloxera made cultivation difficult . The Franconian wine-growing region was not able to consolidate again until the second half of the 20th century. The use of fertilizers and improved cultivation methods had contributed to this, as had the organization in cooperatives and the land consolidation of the 1970s.

Viticulture is now an important economic factor in the village, also because the cultural landscape around Mainstockheim increasingly attracts tourists. For example, several wine hiking trails have been marked out on the corridors around the village. A total of four wineries are located in Mainstockheim and have organized themselves into their own wine-growing association. The winemakers present their wines at the wine festival in mid-July. At the same time, a wine princess is elected in Mainstockheim to represent the wine.

Main ferry with Albertshofen in the background

The town has been connected to the neighboring community of Albertshofen by a Main ferry since 1515. The ferryman Cles Vogler is attested for the year mentioned.

This possibility of crossing the Main is particularly popular with pedestrians and cyclists. However, it is also approved for cars, trucks and agricultural tractors.
