Heroldsberg (colloquially: Herlsbärg ) is a market in the Central Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt and is located eleven kilometers northeast of Nuremberg and 23 kilometers east of Erlangen on Bundesstraße 2 and the Graefenbergbahn .

geography

Geographical location

The place, which has considerable height differences, is in the Sebalder Reichswald . The Gründlach , a tributary of the Regnitz , runs through the place at the southern end of which the Simmelberger Gründlach flows.

Community structure

The Heroldsberg market has 5 districts :

Heroldsberg itself includes the parts of the settlement on Stettenberger Weg and Hundsmühle (with the sewage treatment plant). The hamlet of Stettenberg at the end of Stettenberger Weg, on the other hand, does not belong - contrary to popular belief - to Heroldsberg, but to the neighboring municipality of Kalchreuth .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are - beginning in the north and clockwise - Eckental , Lauf an der Pegnitz , Nürnberg and Kalchreuth .

history

Until the 19th century

The place was first mentioned in 1225 as “Heroltsperge”, but the document could be a forgery. The first secured document comes from the year 1295. The defining word of the original castle name is the personal name Herolt, Herold . The origins of the place go back to the 11th century. The Heroldsberg office served under the emperors to manage extensive imperial estates . From 1391 it came into the possession of the Nuremberg patrician family of the Geuder von Heroldsberg for more than 400 years . The Geuder built four castles there, which are still striking in the townscape today, together with the former fortified church .

Albrecht Dürer: "The Church Village" (1510)

As a friend of the patrician family Geuder, Albrecht Dürer made the pen drawing Das Kirchdorf in 1510 . This is the oldest pictorial representation of the village. It shows the historic town center, which is still formed today by the four castles and the Protestant church of St. Matthew .

The manor of the Barons Geuder von Heroldsberg (Rabenstein) was sequestered by Prussia in 1796 together with the surrounding possessions of the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg . In the Peace of Tilsit in 1807, the Prussian Principality of Ansbach-Bayreuth became part of France. With the Paris Treaty of 1810, the place came from France to Bavaria.

As part of the community edict (early 19th century), the tax district and the rural community Heroldsberg were formed, to which the Hundsmühle belonged. In administration and jurisdiction, it was subordinate to the Erlangen Regional Court and in the financial administration to the Erlangen Rent Office (from 1920 Erlangen Tax Office ). From 1862 Heroldsberg was administered by the Erlangen District Office (renamed the Erlangen District in 1938 ). The jurisdiction remained until 1879 the District Court Erlangen, from 1880 at the district court Erlangen . The community originally had an area of 7.217 km².

In 1837, the Nuremberg doctor Johann Friedrich Engelhardt found Germany's first dinosaur near Heroldsberg and sent the bones to the Frankfurt vertebrate paleontologist Hermann von Meyer for examination . Meyer referred to the dinosaur as Plateosaurus Engelhardti .

Younger story

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent communities Großgeschaidt and Kleingeschaidt were incorporated on the occasion of the regional reform. Until then, both formed independent communities.

Heroldsberg has seen a steady influx of residents since the 1970s. The latest urban development developments are the SunnySide development on the former premises of the Vereinigen Papierwerke.

badges and flags

Heroldsberg has had a coat of arms since 1417.

Heroldsberg coat of arms
Blazon : "In blue between three two-to-one set, silver stars, a red-tongued golden lion head looking out."

Yellow and blue municipal flag

Justification for the coat of arms: The three stars are taken from the coat of arms of the Nuremberg patrician family Geuder . The lion probably points to the lender King Sigismund and is thus the Bohemian lion , even if in a somewhat unusual view.

Architectural monuments

The Protestant St. Matthew Church and the four castles form an important monument ensemble. The locks are named after the color of the shutters, some of which have changed today: The Yellow Castle (sold by Geuder in 1957, then owned by the publisher Karl Borromäus Glock , now owned by a Nuremberg family) is located on Hans-Sachs-Straße. The White Castle (which is owned by the community) is located directly at the St. Matthew Church . It was used as the town hall of the municipality until 2005 and then fundamentally renovated until 2016. It now includes a museum on the local history and the patrician family Geuder von Heroldsberg , a collection of works by the Franconian artist Fritz Griebel and temporary exhibitions. Also on Kirchenweg is the Green Castle (acquired by a dentist in 1977 after the death of the last Geuder-Rabensteiner).
