The defining word of the place name is most likely derived from the Middle High German word "spar (we)" = sparrow, sparrow .

The oldest written mention of the name Spardorf comes from the year 1305. In the handbook of the Nuremberg patricians Holzschuher there is the entry “Sibito de Spardorf 1305”. Since at least the 15th century, the lords of Streitberg owned some estates and forests in Spardorf as imperial fiefdoms.

View from Schwabachtal to Spardorf with the former Schultheiss brickworks in the center of the picture, 2011

The former Schultheiss brickworks, which was founded in 1804, used to be the largest company. Other sources name the year 1787. In the 20th century, the raw materials for the production of bricks and sand-lime bricks were obtained from neighboring towns via Lorenseilbahnen : clay from Marloff stone and sand from Buckenhof. Other well-known mining areas are on the Mistelberg in Kalchreuth (clay) and between Dormitz and Kleinsendelbach (sand). In 2001 the production was taken over by the Austrian Wienerberger Group and closed in 2005. The rented site was used as a warehouse until 2008 and the machines were dismantled. Almost all buildings were demolished in the winter of 2011/2012. The western chimney was preserved as an industrial monument. In 2016 the chimney was shortened by 15 m and the cell phone antennas dismantled. In 2017, the new construction began in the southern part of the site under the name Alte Ziegelei. Several supermarkets were built, which opened in autumn 2018, and later a new large medical center, a pharmacy and a restaurant were added.

The air conditioning company Jackson Lufttechnik existed in the northern part of the site until 2003. The building was then used as a medical center. The currently undeveloped northern part of the site is to be used for residential development.
