Fritz Griebel

Fritz Griebel (born August 22, 1899 in Unfind , † September 29, 1976 in Heroldsberg ) was a German painter , graphic artist , silhouette artist and draftsman for tapestries ; Professor for free graphics and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and its director after the Second World War ; Albrecht Dürer Prize Winner 1932; Honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg since 1970.

Life

Fritz (actually Peter Christoph Friedrich) Griebel was born in Unfind / Lower Franconia in 1899 as the son of a pastor. The family soon moved to Heroldsberg near Nuremberg, where the father took up a job. After leaving grammar school prematurely, Fritz Griebel has been attending the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts since 1917. He studied graphics and book art with Rudolf Schiestl (1878–1931) until he was drafted as a soldier towards the end of the First World War . In 1922 Griebel continued his studies at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin , where he became a master student of Hans Meid (1883–1957).

In 1927 Fritz Griebel returned to Heroldsberg and settled there as a freelance artist for 12 years. During his studies he entered the art world with his own publication. In the book Gottesgarten , published in 1922, old songs correspond to paper cutouts by Fritz Griebel. Numerous exhibitions follow. A large collective exhibition was canceled in 1940 for political reasons.

After his military service from 1940 to 1945, Griebel was appointed professor for free graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . From 1948 to 1957 he was director of the academy, which was housed in Ellingen Castle due to the war . Fritz Griebel tirelessly took care of the new building according to plans by the architect Sep Ruf (1908–1982) from 1949 to 1954 in the forest area near the Tiergarten, where the oldest art academy in the German-speaking world is still based today. Until his retirement in 1966, Fritz Griebel continued to work as a professor of free graphics and painting and also left behind a multifaceted oeuvre.

Fritz Griebel's oeuvre is characterized by an extraordinary range of artistic expression and artistic techniques. Even as a child, Griebel practiced fine painting after Albrecht Dürer and paper cutting . The focus of Fritz Griebel's art is the human being in peaceful nature and still life . In the course of the artistic process, he transforms the phenomena of nature into abstract signs and forms. His work is characterized by a pluralism of styles, ranging from naturalistic portraits to neoclassical and symbolic currents to abstract painting .

Estate and honors

The written estate is in the German Art Archive of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg ; Works in the graphic collection in the Stadtmuseum Fembohaus in Nuremberg as well as in public and private collections.

In the place where he died, Heroldsberg and in Fürth (Ronhof district), Fritz-Griebel-Straße was named after the artist.
