St. Matthäus is a more than 500 year old Protestant church in the Central Franconian market town of Heroldsberg . The 1477 as "St. Margaretha ”first mentioned in a document of the Bamberg diocese received its current name St. Matthew after the Reformation in 1525. The church is embedded between the four Heroldsberg castles on a hill and is known for Albrecht Dürer's pen drawing“ Das Kirchdorf ”(1510 ).

Building history

The church was originally laid out as a fortified church / castle church . This was characterized by battlements, storage and accommodation rooms as well as watchtowers. Most of the fortifications were demolished in the 19th century. Thick sandstone walls around the church yard still bear witness to the former fortifications.

The oldest part of the church building that has survived is that built in the 12th – 13th centuries. Century built church tower . This was given its current form with the four watch towers as part of a renovation in 1435 and marks the defensive character of the church building. In the entrance area of the tower there are fragmentarily preserved frescoes of the four evangelists - Matthew (human), Mark (lion), Luke (bull) and John (eagle). The paintings date back to around 1380.

The choir and altar of the church building were consecrated in 1444. The central nave was given its present form in 1820/21 after an addition. The roof was raised and a second gallery was installed. The painting of the gallery parapet was restored in 1977 according to the former classicistic-Biedermeier decor from 1821.

The tower of the church was damaged by American shelling during World War II. After the first damage had already been repaired in 1946/47, the damage caused by the war was completely repaired in 1956.

The pastor couple Cornelia and Thilo Auers have headed the Heroldsberg parish since March 2018.
