The origins of the company go back to the company Großberger und Kurz , founded in Nuremberg in 1855 , which produced pencils , and which relied on machine production from the very beginning. In 1865 the - meanwhile over-indebted - company was taken over by Gustav Adam Schwanhäußer, who renamed it the Schwan Pencil Factory. The company was able to increase its production quickly.

Shortly before the Second World War , the manufacture of cosmetic products (make-up pencils) began.

The following developments should be emphasized:

After the end of the war, when the company buildings were destroyed, cosmetic products became increasingly important, but the range of products for writing and drawing was also expanded, for example new types of fiber pens.

In 1976 the company, whose number of employees had meanwhile increased to over 1,000, was renamed Schwan-STABILO. In 1995 the company moved to the neighboring Heroldsberg . Wooden pencil production was relocated to the Czech Republic from 1991 . Another plant has existed in Malaysia since 1967 that mainly produces ballpoint pens . The cosmetics sector and the manufacture of ink pens remained in Germany . Schwan-STABILO is the world market leader in cosmetic pencils and produces for almost all known cosmetic brands. The company's export share is 88%.

In 2005 Stabilo International GmbH was founded as a subsidiary of the writing instrument sector. Its other subsidiary is Schwan-STABILO Promotion Products GmbH & CO. KG. The company of the writing instruments division itself is still Schwan-STABILO Schwanhäußer GmbH & Co. KG .

In September 2006 Schwan-Stabilo took over Deuter Sport GmbH from Gersthofen near Augsburg , which is best known for its backpacks.

In September 2008, Stiftung Warentest published a test, according to which thick Stabilo Trio colored pencils were heavily contaminated with plasticizers. In October 2008, the company had to take PVC erasers with swan motifs made in Malaysia across Europe off the market due to exposure to the plasticizer bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP).

On July 1, 2011, Schwan-Stabilo took over Ortovox Sportartikel GmbH, based in Taufkirchen near Munich , which is known for outdoor clothing. On July 7, 2015, Schwan-Stabilo took over the Maier Sports Group based in Köngen (and thus also its subsidiary GONSO in Albstadt ), which is also known for outdoor clothing.

In 2014, the company was involved in a lawsuit with two employees, which made it into the headlines. Two employees had auctioned kitchens that were supposed to be disposed of. The money went to an aid fund for a church and a local kindergarten. Schwan-Stabilo saw this as the theft of company property and dismissed both employees without notice. Both proceedings were amicably settled before the regional labor court after the employees had paid 2000 euros each in the form of donations and both employees were reinstated.

In 2015, the company celebrated its 160th anniversary with the inauguration of a branded building (STABILO CUBE) at the company's headquarters. Over 4,000 employees and their families were invited.

In addition, a new $ 40 million cosmetics factory went into operation in the USA.

In 2019, the group announced that it would cut 200 jobs in the cosmetics sub-division at the two German locations and increase capacities in the Czech Republic and the USA. After two years of decline in sales, the entire group is in a phase of rebuilding and restructuring.
