The Deuter Sport GmbH is a German manufacturer of backpacks , sleeping bags and accessories based in Gersthofen in Augsburg . In addition to Ortovox , Maier Sports and Gonso, the company belongs to the Outdoor subgroup of the Schwanhäußer Industrie Holding GmbH & Co. KG group.

history

The company was founded in 1898 by Hans Deuter in Augsburg-Oberhausen . The first field of activity was the delivery of letter bags and sacks to the royal Bavarian post office . Even before the outbreak of World War I , Deuter was producing knapsacks , rucksacks and tents for the army. In 1919 the company became a stock corporation and focused primarily on leather goods, backpacks, suitcases and tents. In the 1930s, Deuter backpacks were first used on Himalayan expeditions. With the beginning of the Second World War , equipment was produced for the Wehrmacht . In the course of its history, Deuter has equipped mountain expeditions several times , e.g. B. the first ascent of Nanga Parbat by Hermann Buhl in 1953.

Deuter Sport Backpack

In 1989, the luggage and backpacks division spun off from the stock corporation. Deuter was taken over in 2006 by the Schwan-Stabilo industrial group . In the same year, Deuter launched the SL ( Slim Line ) line for women, specially adapted to the female anatomy . In the 2007 financial year, Deuter generated sales of 38 million euros and employed 45 people at the company's headquarters in Gersthofen. The main sales area is Western Europe.

In July 2013, Deuter banned dealers from selling Deuter products through Amazon or other Internet mail order companies. Advice, for example on the appropriate insulation for sleeping bags, is essential. Shopkeepers in many industries have been complaining about “advice theft” for years: the customer gets advice in the shop and buys online; the specialist dealer does not benefit from his advice. According to a ruling by the Frankfurt Regional Court in June 2014, the products can again be purchased from Amazon and other mail order companies. In August 2018, Deuter announced that it would renew the dealer agreement. This happened in the course of an adjustment of the selective sales orientation, through which pure online retailers have been able to purchase and sell the goods directly since 2019.

Company headquarters in Gersthofen

In 2013, the company moved into the new company headquarters in Daimlerstrasse in Gersthofen. A little more than 100 employees work at the headquarters in the areas of logistics, product development, sales and marketing.

Deuter is a member of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and the Fair Wear Foundation . In June 2019, the Fair Wear Foundation again awarded Deuter Leader status .
