history

Ortovox F2
Ortovox outdoor clothing

Ortovox was founded in 1980 by Gerald Kampel. In cooperation with Jürgen Wegner he developed the Ortovox F2 . This is an avalanche transceiver (LVS) that could transmit and receive on a double frequency. Before, there were only avalanche transceivers that could transmit and receive on two different frequencies (2.275 kHz and 457 kHz). This led to fatal accidents during an avalanche because Spilled in the avalanche victim search could not be recovered sufficiently quickly through the various types of equipment. The device, which was new at the time, was able to transmit and receive on both frequencies and simplified the search for buried subjects. For a long time, Ortovox was the market leader in the field of avalanche transceivers with a market share of around 60%. The Ortovox product range has been gradually expanded over the years. In 1990 the company was renamed Ortovox Sportartikel GmbH.

In 2011 Kampel sold the company to Schwan-Stabilo Industrie Holding, which is known, among other things, as a pen producer through the Schwan-Stabilo brand . Together with the companies Deuter Sport and Maier Sports, Ortovox is part of the Outdoor subgroup, which achieved sales of around 112 million euros in the 2014/15 financial year.

In 2015 the company joined the Fair Wear Foundation and the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles .

Ortovox is known in the clothing sector for its material combinations of wool with other materials.
