Historical book of place names of Bavaria

The Historical Place Name Book of Bavaria (HONB) is a compilation of the toponomastics of Bavarian place names that has been published since 1951 and is published by the Commission for Bavarian State History . The guidelines were changed several times in the course of the publication.

Work structure

The individual volumes each examine the place names of a district according to the state of the administrative structure of Bavaria that was valid from 1862 to 1879 . Accordingly, the HONB will be made up of 142 volumes. The volumes are numbered separately according to the administrative districts . The administrative district Palatinate and the administrative districts in Bohemia and Moravia that were forcibly attached from 1939 to 1945 are not taken into account . Currently (as of 2019) 38 volumes have been published and 28 volumes are in progress.

All volumes have a systematic and a lexical part. In addition to the officially designated parts of the community , residential areas and deserted areas also receive an article. Originally the HONB was not only limited to place names, but also received articles corridor , water bodies or mountain names . The individual articles list documentary entries in which the respective toponym is mentioned. In addition to the mere spelling, there is additional information on the political and ecclesiastical rulership and administrative organization (e.g. manorial rule, local rule, state sovereignty), court affiliation and organization as well as political communities. There is an interpretation from a linguistic point of view, which also takes into account the dialectic pronunciation of the toponyms.
