Taiwo Leo Awuonda Atieno (born August 6, 1985 in Brixton ) is a former British, now Kenyan football player.

Career

society

Taiwo Atieno began his career at Walsall FC at the age of fifteen . After graduating from Walsall's A-Youth, he was loaned out to the Southern Football League at Nuneaton Town FC . After the loan deal ended, he signed a professional contract in July 2004. After various loan positions at Rochdale AFC , Chester City , the Kidderminster Harriers and Darlington FC , he had to leave Walsall FC at the end of the 2005/06 season after the club was relegated from Football League One .

In the 2006/07 season he had a brief stint at Dagenham & Redbridge and played three league games before he signed a contract with Tamworth FC in August 2006 . Atieno scored a total of twelve goals in 39 games that season, but those goals could not save his club from relegation to the Conference North . He then left the club for North America and moved to the Puerto Rico Islanders FC , who play in the American USL First Division . After he scored five goals in ten games in the first season, he managed four goals in 22 games in the second season. With the Islanders he won the First Division Commissioner's Cup in 2008.

In March 2009 he moved to the Rochester Rhinos , during the preparation he had a guest appearance at Charleston Battery , where he did not play a single game. A year later he returned to England to Luton Town , initially only staying there until July. During the summer break, Atieno completed a trial training session with the South African club Supersport United , but signed a contract with Luton Town on September 2 until January 2011, since Supersport did not submit a contract to him. On October 30, he scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 home win over Bath City . On November 17, he scored twice in the 4-2 win over Corby Town in the first round of the FA Cup . He had quite a good run by the end of his contract, but despite his goals, his contract was not renewed at the end of January. On February 11, he came under contract with Stevenage FC from Football League Two and made his debut a day later in the 1-0 defeat by Shrewsbury Town . But this was his only league appearance for Stevenage, in May 2011 his contract expired.

In preparation for the 2011/12 season, Atieno completed a two-week trial training session at Torquay United . He scored his first goal in his first friendly against Tiverton Town , only three days later he scored again against Bristol City . On July 25th, Torquay United offered him an annual deal, which he signed. He played his first official league game on August 6, where he came on as a substitute in the 68th minute. Just a week later, he scored the interim 1: 1 in a 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers and took the penalty for a 2-1 winner.

National team

In January 2009 Atieno announced that he would like to play for Kenya , it was already a childhood dream of his. But after the Kenyan immigration minister demanded that he surrender his British passport before he could accept Kenyan citizenship, his international assignment for Kenya seemed very unlikely. Although, according to media reports, Atieno had already received his passport and could be part of the next World Cup qualifier against Tunisia , this was not the case. He made his debut in June 2009 when he came on as a substitute for Mozambique shortly before the end and played the full ninety minutes in a friendly against Bahrain . He also came on as a substitute in the second leg against Mozambique and in the second leg against Tunisia he was used for one half.

Others

Atieno has a twin brother who plays basketball at West Chester University in Pennsylvania .
