The Wicklesgreuth – Windsbach railway , also popularly known as the Löhe Express , is a branch line in Bavaria . It branches off the Nuremberg – Crailsheim railway line in Wicklesgreuth and leads to Windsbach .

history

The technical acceptance of the line took place on November 24, 1894, Prince Regent Luitpold gave permission to start operations on November 27, 1894, which officially took place on December 1, 1894.

Initially only three pairs of trains ran, with 2nd and 3rd class, during the Second World War an emergency service was maintained. In the absence of competition, all goods were transported by rail, including live animals in special “cattle wagons”. At all train stations there were goods handling facilities , where parcels could be posted and picked up, and “open loading tracks” for loading and unloading entire freight cars.

Over the years, extensions of the track systems have been added to the single-track railway line. In all places there was at least one loading platform with a loading ramp, various company connections, for example in Petersaurach to the Rheinische Kunststoffwerke. In Neuendettelsau there was a total of the largest expansion with twelve points in the station area. This also included the sidings for the local ammunition plant ( Muna ) and the sewage system at the beginning of the 20th century. The Windsbach terminus had a two-tier locomotive shed where the locomotives could be parked overnight. In addition, a reserve locomotive was always kept there. In both world wars there were limited timetables with which an emergency operation to supply the population was maintained.

Since September 27, 1987, the line has been integrated into the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association as the R71 regional train line.

Passenger traffic has been handled by class 642 diesel multiple units since 2000 , which run every two hours on weekends and approximately every hour from Monday to Friday. Freight traffic no longer takes place; Until 1996 the Rheinische Kunststoffwerke in Petersaurach was still used for goods traffic. The track into the plant is still in place, but the switch (the last one on the line) was expanded in 2008.

In Neuendettelsau there is also a ticket office, namely a travel center that is open Monday to Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The route is largely passable (as of 2019) at 60 km / h, in the area of the Windsbach stop at 30 km / h. Speed drops of up to 20 km / h exist at several level crossings. The route is supplied with GSM-R from two base stations .

In mid-December 2015, the Bavarian Railway Company announced that it would again award the services in the “Nuremberg Diesel Network” to DB Regio. The formal award was made on January 4, 2016. As of June 2019, the Wicklesgreuth – Windsbach route will therefore be integrated into the “Nuremberg Diesel Network”. The contract runs until June 2031. From December 2021 onwards, the route is to be offered every hour, including on weekends.
