The VAG series G1 (for " articulated train 1") replaces the more than 40 year old trains of the series DT1 of the Nuremberg subway . The first trains started operating on August 20, 2020. For the first time in Nuremberg, the four-car units can be accessed from all four cars. Externally and technically, the series also differs greatly from its predecessors.
development
After more than forty years of service, the maintenance of the DT1 double multiple units is now more complex than purchasing a new one, which is why VAG wants to replace the DT1 with the newly developed type G1.
In 2015 the order went to Siemens Transportation Systems . The car bodies are built at Siemens Vienna. Drive components such as converters, motors or converters are manufactured in Nuremberg. In the first quarter of 2019, the first G1 was to be used for testing and training purposes in Nuremberg. The use of passengers was planned from the turn of the year 2019/2020. All units should be in operation by August 2020.
In November 2018, VAG exercised an initial option for six more vehicles. These are planned for use on the U1 line from 2021 and will replace twelve DT2 double railcars there.
In expectation of a further increase in passenger numbers, VAG ordered seven more vehicles of the G1 type in March 2019. This means that a total of 34 vehicles have been ordered, which should go into operation by 2022. A train set was presented to the public for the first time in October 2019 in the Scharfreiterring underground station .
The new trains had their first passenger service on August 20, 2020.
construction
The type G1 is completely accessible and has four car bodies connected with transitions. The vehicle body is reminiscent of the Munich type C . The doors are a hundred millimeters wider and are surrounded by light strips that indicate the closing process in color. The car bodies are air-conditioned and have a sliding step under the doors for barrier-free access. At each end there is a driver's cab, but the railcars are prepared for automatic operation with RUBIN .
