The VAG DT1 series is the oldest vehicle generation on the Nuremberg subway . It largely corresponds to the type A of the Munich subway and with a car body that is clearly adapted to the tunnel profile there, the type U of the Vienna subway .

development

When the Nuremberg city council decided in favor of a fully-fledged subway in 1965 , the builders then opted for a fleet of vehicles that is largely identical to that of the Munich subway, which was also being built at the time. The vehicle data of the type designated as DT1 (DT stands for double multiple unit) corresponded almost exactly to those of the type A from the state capital.

The vehicles were delivered between 1970 and 1984 and were given the car numbers 401/402 to 527/528. Apart from the red and white paintwork (as opposed to blue and white in Munich), the biggest difference was that the Nuremberg cars also have an auxiliary pantograph between the individual cars for workshop trips, as well as magnetic rail brakes . The vehicles delivered from 1980 (465/466 ff.) Were the first vehicles of their kind to have a three-phase drive .

The table gives an overview of the delivery of the individual series:

series Wagon numbers Delivery period
1 401 / 402-427 / 428 1970-1971
2 429 / 430-447 / 448 1975
3 449 / 450-463 / 464 1979
4th 465 / 466-491 / 492 1980
5 493 / 494-507 / 508 1981-1982
6th 509 / 510-527 / 528 1983-1984

construction

Interior of a DT1

The car body is made from extruded profiles and aluminum sheets using a lightweight construction. There are three double-leaf swivel sliding doors on each trolley and side, which can be opened independently of one another. The clear width of the doors operated by compressed air is 1,300 mm. The spacious driver's cabs also have one door on each side of the car.

Inside the car there is a 2 + 2 seating arrangement, with a single car each comprising twelve compartments.

The original vehicle paintwork was red with a surrounding white decorative stripe below the window front , which earned them the name Pegnitzpfeil . In the meantime, however, the DT1s are being adapted to the current VAG design, which was introduced with the successor series DT2 , during the main inspections .

The vehicles are powered by a 180 (up to 463/464) or 195 kW motor (from 465/466) mounted lengthways on the bogie. The pantographs are attached to the two outer bogies. An electronic thyristor control regulates the motor-driven cam switch mechanism .

Conversions

In the course of time, the vehicles were rebuilt again and again, either to test technical innovations in practice or to adapt the vehicles to later production series.

Since the delivery of the car 449/450 are as destination displays automatic conveyor belts used in place of previously used signs direction; all vehicles with the old system were then converted. The armrests installed in all vehicles were gradually removed due to increasing vandalism. Since 1997 all vehicles have an emergency intercom system in the door area. With the delivery of the DT3 , all vehicles with the exception of the first series were equipped with video monitoring of the passenger area, sensitive door edges, an optical and acoustic door closing announcement and a digital stop announcement. From the beginning of 2010 to the beginning of 2011, the high-maintenance roller tape displays on all DT1 trains with three-phase drive (from wagon number 465/466) were replaced by digital LED displays.

Vehicle exchange

It has already happened several times in the history of the Nuremberg and Munich subways that one company lent the other vehicles for certain reasons, which was possible due to the identical structure of the vehicles. After their guest performance, the multiple units involved received a city coat of arms next to the driver's door as a sign of their commitment, which has, however, disappeared again due to repainting in recent years.

The table provides an overview of the exchange cars, the duration of their guest performance and the occasion. The Munich wagons that were taken over by VAG and no longer returned are not listed. These vehicles have already been scrapped.

Retirement

The first vehicle to be retired was car 447 of DT unit 447/448 after a fire in 1983. The still intact car 448 served as a test vehicle until it was scrapped in 2006. a. for the interior design of the DT2 and DT3 series. In 2010, the DC double multiple units of the first series delivered in 1970 (DT 401/402 to 427/428), with the exception of units 401/402 and 403/404 intended as museum vehicles, were retired and scrapped. In 2012, the DC double multiple units of the second series delivered in 1975 (DT 429/430 to 445/446), with the exception of the double multiple units 433/434 and 443/444 still in passenger service, were retired and scrapped.
