Saslauje ( Belarusian Заслаўе [ zaˈsɫau̯je ]), also Saslavl ( Russian Заславль ), is a Belarusian city in Minskaya Woblasz in Minsk Raion , 20 kilometers northwest of the capital Minsk . Today it has about 14,000 inhabitants and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Saslaujer reservoir , also known as the Minsk Sea.
Saslauje is said to have been founded in 985 by Vladimir I , who sent his wife Rogneda and his son Isjaslav from Polatsk to live there; The city is also named after this son. In the early Middle Ages the city was the seat of the Principality of Saslauje . In the 11th century the city was fortified; Much of the historical area was placed under protection for archaeological purposes.
