Waloschyn ( Belarusian Валожын ) is a city in Belarus in the Minskaya Woblasz and the capital of the Waloschyn Rajon . Waloschyn had 11,100 inhabitants in 2009.

history

Waloschyn was first mentioned in a document in 1440. The place was owned by the noble Tyszkiewicz family and belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . As a result of the second partition of Poland , Valoschyn fell to the Russian Empire in 1793 . In the Polish-Soviet War , Valoshyn was captured by Polish troops in 1919 and in 1921, in the Riga Peace Treaty, it was awarded to the Second Polish Republic . In September 1939, as a result of the German-Soviet non-aggression pact, Valoshyn was occupied by the Red Army and incorporated into the Soviet Union . During the German-Soviet War , Waloschyn was captured by German troops in July 1941 and recaptured by the Red Army in July 1944. Valozhyn was added to the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic .

The Jewish community

In 1931 the city had 5600 inhabitants, mostly Jews . The number of Jews immediately before the German invasion in 1941 is estimated at around 3,000. They were murdered in three "actions".

Waloschyn was known through the Yeshiva of Waloschyn (Talmud school) founded in 1803 .
