Gestratz v O, winter evening 03.JPG

The Allgäu village Gestratz in the valley of the Upper Argen has been a parish village for the more than thirty hamlets and wastelands of the widely ramified community for centuries. In the middle of the loosely built village, at the intersection of old streets and paths, the parish church of St. Gallus rises, surrounded by the community's walled cemetery. Founded in the 8th century by the St. Gallen monastery near the Roman road Bregenz-Kempten, it was rebuilt in 1437, received its well-known fresco cycle at that time and was further expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries The building that dominates the valley floor, is assigned to the rectory to the north, a modern complex that has retained the external appearance of the previous building from 1695, to the south the sacristan house from the 18th century, now the municipal office, and the school from around 1925, to the east the old schoolhouse, the Dairy, the benefit house, the former bakery and the Adler restaurant with the former village smithy. These are buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries with gable roofs, usually two-story, with shingled outer walls and shutters. Their still valid or former functions make the character of the village as a community center clear. With the construction of the community hall in 1972, which was fitted into the townscape, the place, which typically only has three farm properties, received another community center. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
