Dzyarzhynsk or Dzerzhinsk ( Belarusian Дзяржынск / Dzyarzhynsk ; Russian Дзержинск / Dzerzhinsk , polish earlier Kojdanów ) is a Belarusian city in Rajon Dzyarzhynsk in the Minsk Region , 40 km west of the Belarusian capital Minsk , with 25,164 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2009) . It is named after the Soviet revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky .

history
Before the Second World War , Dzjarshynsk, then still known as Koidanow ( Belarusian Койданаў ), was one of the westernmost cities of the former Soviet Union . A Polish minority lived here , for whom an autonomous district had been established. During the Stalinist purges almost all male members and also many women of this ethnic group were murdered, while a small remainder of the population was deported .
