Berasino or Beresino ( Belarusian Беразіно / Berasino ; Russian Березино / Beresino ) also known as Bjaresan ( Бярэзань ), is a town on the Beresina in Minskaya Woblasz in Belarus . Berasino has 14,000 inhabitants.

history

Although there are no reliable documents about this, it is assumed that at the time of the Kievan Rus a trading post was established on the Berezina River on the historical route from the Varangians to the Greeks . The first chronicle of a settlement comes from the year 1501, which is considered the date of foundation.

In the middle of the 16th century Berasino owned one of the most powerful dynasties in Poland-Lithuania : the aristocratic Sapieha family , who controlled large areas in central Belarus. In 1641 Kazimierz Lev Sapieha built a wooden Catholic church. During the Russo-Polish War , the city was briefly captured by Russian-Cossack forces in 1655, but soon returned and became part of the Minsk Voivodeship.

In the course of the partitions of Poland , the city fell to the Russian Empire in 1793 . During Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 , the city was under French / Polish command when Napoleon's unsuccessful advance on Moscow was stopped by General Barclay de Tolly .

In the second half of the 19th century the city developed economically. In 1897 4871 inhabitants were counted here, of whom 3377 were Jews. Until the beginning of the First World War , the river port developed, where mainly salt and wood were transported down the river. In 1893 the family built Potocki , until 1920 the owner of the place, a vodka - distillery , still the most profitable companies in the city.

After the October Revolution , during the Russian Civil War and the Polish-Soviet War , the city changed hands several times and was occupied by the German and Polish military until it became part of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic in June 1920 . Mass industrialization took place in the interwar period and the population grew from 2,968 in 1930 to 4,800 in 1939.

During the Second World War , the city was occupied by National Socialist Germany . The Jewish population fell victim to the Holocaust . On July 3, 1944, the city was liberated from the 2nd Belarusian Front in Operation Bagration . On July 7, 1968, the place received city rights.
