The Riga Station ( Russian Рижский вокзал  / Rischski Vokzal ) is a terminal station in the Russian capital Moscow . It is located six kilometers north of the city center and is one of the city's eight long-distance train stations.

General

The Riga train station is located at the starting point of the railway line from Moscow to Riga , which gives the station its name. It is located a little north of Moscow city center, directly at the intersection of the Prospekt Mira arterial road (which merges into the M8 trunk road out of town ) with the Third Transport Ring . The Rishskaya metro station on the Kalushsko-Rishskaya line is located near the train station , and several bus and trolleybus lines also stop at the Riga train station . The two regional train stations Rischskaja and Rschewskaja are also close to the train station .

Currently, the train station is of relatively minor importance as a traffic junction. Long-distance train connections exist only to Riga (two train pairs per day) and to Velikiye Luki (one train pair per day). Local transport connections (so-called Elektritschki ) run from the Riga train station to the western part of Moscow Oblast , including Krasnogorsk , Istra , Wolokolamsk and Schachowskaja .

history

Interior of the train station

Today's Riga train station with its reception building and other facilities was built in the years 1897–1901 at the same time as the construction of the railway line connecting Moscow with the Russian north-west and with Latvia . This route was of considerable economic importance for the Russian Empire , as it facilitated trade relations with Europe via the year-round ice-free Baltic ports of Latvia. Originally the railway line Moscow- Windau Railway and the newly built station was called Windauer Bahnhof (Russian Виндавский вокзал ).

In the first months after the relocation and commissioning of the 1,100-kilometer-long railway line, a temporary station northwest of the city limits was used for passenger handling. The final opening of the station took place with a solemn inauguration ceremony on September 11, 1901 Century (including the GUM department store or the historical museum building ) is typical. The facade of the station building is adorned with numerous ornaments, arched windows and dome-shaped towers, which underline this architectural style. The building was designed by the Petersburg city architect Stanislaw Brschosowski , who among other things had built the Vitebsk train station in his city . The architect Juli Diderichs , who had already designed the station concourse when the Pawelez train station was built, was also heavily involved in the construction .

At the beginning of the 20th century, Windau Railway Station was one of the most important railway stations in Moscow. From here it was connected to many areas in the north-west of the tsarist empire, including B. Warsaw , Vitebsk and with today's Estonia and Finland . In the course of the century it was renamed several times: in 1930 in Baltic station , in 1942 in Rschewer station , and in 1946 it was finally given its current name.
