The third transport ring ( Russian третье транспортное кольцо / tretje transportnoje kolzo ) is a ring road in the Russian capital Moscow . It was completed in 2003 and, in its function as a high-speed traffic ring, complements the inner-city garden ring and the MKAD ring road that surrounds the city .

General

The third transport ring is around 36 km long, of which around 19 km run on bridges and 5 km in a total of three tunnels . The width of the lane is at least four lanes. An eight-lane expansion has only been implemented on heavily used sections. In addition, hard shoulders are an exception, so that even minor sheet metal damage or breakdowns can cause traffic disruptions. The motorway ring has a total of 17 junctions . Like the outer ring road MKAD - but not the inner city garden ring - the third traffic ring has neither level crossings nor pedestrian crossings . However, zebra crossings can be found on driveways and exits, as well as on the MKAD, to cross them. Thus, the third traffic ring is not a fully-fledged motorway according to Western European understanding. The maximum speed on the third traffic ring is 80 km / h and is adjusted to the traffic flow by traffic control systems if necessary .

history

The construction of the third ring essentially began in the late 1990s. It was planned as a relief road for inner-city traffic, which until then had only been dependent on the garden ring for cross-roads and hopelessly clogged this and adjacent streets. However, some sections of the new ring date back to the 1960s, such as the expressway between the Begowaja and Rischskaja metro stations , which was expanded in 2002 and incorporated into the third ring. The first newly built section of the third ring was the western part near the Sparrow Hills ; it was put into operation on May 10, 1999. The complete ring closure took place on December 5, 2003 with the commissioning of the Lefortowo tunnel near the Lefortowo district .

In the meantime, the construction of a new Moscow motorway ring has started, the Fourth Transport Ring, which, in addition to the third ring, is intended to relieve the enormous growth in car traffic in the metropolis of ten million - at least for a few more years.
