The boulevard ring ( Russian Бульва́рное кольцо́ , Bulwarnoje Kolzo ) is a collective name for a ring road-like sequence of boulevards in the historic center of Moscow . The boulevard ring consists of a total of ten such boulevards and, contrary to what the name suggests, is not a closed ring, as it is bordered at both of its southern ends by the Moscow River .

The fortification wall of the so-called White City originally stood on the site of today's boulevard ring , which served as the third protective wall of the Tsar's capital in the 17th and 18th centuries, in addition to the wall of the Kremlin and the Kitai-Gorod settlement . It had 27 watchtowers and ten entry and exit gates, which are still reminiscent of the names of some of the squares that separate the boulevards. With the increasing expansion of the city, this wall was no longer needed and was finally removed in the 1780s. From 1796 boulevards were laid out along their former course, for which, among other things, similar Parisian boulevards served as models.

The boulevard ring is the oldest and smallest traffic ring in the Russian capital, the road network of which is based on a framework of larger ring and radial streets. The garden ring , which was laid out in the 19th century, runs a little further outside the city center ; the city in its current boundaries is surrounded by the MKAD motorway ring , which has recently been relieved by the third traffic ring and the fourth traffic ring is planned for the near future .
