Location of Lefortowo in Moscow

The district of Lefortowo ( listen in Russian Лефортово ? / I ) is east of central Moscow and was named after the Swiss admiral François Le Fort , who was a close confidante of Tsar Peter the Great . The unit, which was under the command of Le Fort, was stationed on the left bank of the Jausa River . Audio file / audio sample

Originally the name only referred to the location of the unit, later the entire area between Nemezkaja sloboda (German settlement) in the west and Annengofskaja Roschtscha was added. In the course of time, a tsar's palace was built in the quarter, which is now a tank academy. To date, Lefortowo has retained its importance as the main location of several military units and academies.

At the beginning of the 20th century, factories and production facilities were built on the adjacent properties.

The most important companies were and still are the steel producer Serp i Molot (German "Sichel und Hammer") and the crystal spirit factory . For reasons of environmental protection, the steel producer is to be relocated to the outskirts and space is to be created for new housing estates, office buildings and shopping opportunities. The spirits factory has been renovated and is currently also home to the Vodka Museum, which is one of the sights of the district.

The Vvedenskoye Cemetery, the most important German cemetery on the territory of Moscow, is located in the Lefortovo district .

The notorious Lefortowo prison for political prisoners also got its name from the neighborhood.
