Rîbniţa (also Rabnita ; Russian Рыбница Rybnitsa ; Ukrainian Рибниця Rybnyzja ) is a town in northern Transnistria . Thanks to the modern Moldova Steel Works located there by the Soviet Union in 1984 , Rîbnița represents the economic backbone of Transnistria.
geography
Rîbnița is located in the northeast of the country, on the east bank of the Dniester, opposite the Moldovan Rezina Rajon . The Dubăsari district borders to the south, the city of Camenca to the north .

The population of Rîbnița is around 57,000 (2004). After the founding of the steel mill in 1984, Rîbnița has grown considerably.

history
Rîbnița was first mentioned in 1628 as a settlement on the east bank of the Dniester , at that time it was part of Podolia and belonged to the Kingdom of Poland . During the second partition of Poland in 1793, the city fell to Russia . In 1938 Rîbnița received city rights. The municipality of Ofatin Stadti , where Anton Rubinstein was born in 1829, is also located near the city . During the time of the Soviet Union, the city was part of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic . It has been under the control of Transnistria since 1990 .
economy
The city is an important industrial location, it is the location of a sugar factory, a steel mill, a cement works and a liquor factory. Rîbnița has a river port. There is also a branch of the Transnistrian State University of Tiraspol .
The city gained international attention because a study by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) found that the area around Rîbnița has increased radioactivity. It is believed that contaminated material from Chernobyl was buried there.
