The country here belonged to the Ukrainian-Moldovan village called Nezavertaylovka since the time of Catherine the Great. On January 4, 1963, the settlement received the status of urban settlement called Dnestrovsk. This name gave him the first director of the power plant Methodius I. Mudrenko. Schools and cultural institutions were built in the urban settlement. On September 1, 1963, a new two-story school building was presented to the students. The population rose to around 8,000 in 1970. Dnestrovsk is currently home to over 11,000 people of various nationalities.

Since the end of the Transnistrian conflict in 1992, Dnestrovsc has been administered by the de facto independent new state of Transnistria . In 2002, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Transnistria, the urban settlement was granted city status.
