Camenca ( Russian Каменка Kamenka , Ukrainian Кам'янка Kam'janka ) is a city in Transnistria or Republic of Moldova with about 9400 inhabitants. It is the administrative capital of the Rajons of the same name and lies on the Dnestr River .

history

In the city

The area in which Camenca is located today belonged in the early Middle Ages to the Kievan Rus , to the Principality of Halych-Volodymyr , later to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and then to Poland-Lithuania . The first documentary mention of today's Camenca took place in 1609, the city sees the year 1608 as its founding date. In 1793 the area of today's Transnistria , and with it Camenca, fell to the Russian Empire . The German-Russian nobleman Pyotr Wittgenstein played an important role in the development of the city in the 19th century.

After the October Revolution , the area became part of the Soviet Union and initially belonged to the Ukrainian republic , then from 1940 to the Moldovan SSR . During the Second World War, the region of Transnistria, and thus also Camenca, was briefly occupied by Romania , but was recaptured by the Soviet Union in 1944. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Moldova now claimed the Transnistria region. However, after internal tensions, Transnistria broke away from Moldova. Moldova tried to retake the region by force of arms, but suffered a defeat by Transnistrian troops.

Transnistria has therefore been de facto independent from Moldova since 1992, even if this status has not yet been recognized internationally by any state and is mostly still regarded as part of Moldova.
