The Shevchenko Transnistria State University ( Russian Приднестровский государственный университет имени Тараса Шевченко , shortly ГГУ / PGU ) is a university in the Transnistrian capital Tiraspol . It has branches in Bendery and Rybnitsa .
history
The history of the university goes back to 1930 when today's university was founded as a pedagogical institute. In 1939 the institute was named after the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko . When Transnistria broke away from Moldova in 1990 in the course of an armed conflict , the State Corporate University of the Pridnestrovye Region was founded in Tiraspol . In 1992, this university was merged with the former Tiraspol Pedagogical Institute and the present-day Taras Shevchenko Transnistrian State University was formed from it. In 2010 the university celebrated its 80th anniversary. It now works according to Russian standards, and the reforms of the Bologna Process are also to be adopted.
Not only locals study at the university, but also many residents from Russian-speaking regions of the Republic of Moldova, including around 400 students from Gagauzia .
In 1992 the Moldovan state founded a Tiraspol University in Exile in Chișinău , which also refers to the former educational institute. It still bears the name “Tiraspol State University”.
