Yuri Alexandrovich Malyshev

Yuri Alexandrovich Malyshev ( Russian Юрий Александрович Малышев * 1. February 1947 in Khimki ) is a former Soviet rowers . He was 1972 Olympic champion in one .

Malyshev was the son of a printer and learned to row on the Khimki reservoir. He started at the Mayak sports club , but then moved to Wodnik Chimki ; he trained with Yevgeny Sirotinsky. After a fourth place in the single at the 1970 World Rowing Championships , he won his first Soviet championship title in 1971 and also won the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR . At the European Rowing Championships in 1971 , he finished fifth.

In 1972 he repeated his victory at the Soviet championships. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he won with the fastest time of all heats ahead of Wolfgang Güldenpfennig from the GDR. Malyshev also won the second semi-final, but the winner of the first semi-final, the world and European champion Alberto Demiddi, was more than three seconds faster. In the final, Malyshev won by one second over Demiddi, and Güldenpfennig received the bronze medal.
