Charles Cornelius Smith (born August 22, 1975 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American basketball player . His positions are those of the shooting guard or small forward . He currently plays for Virtus Roma in the Italian basketball league . His greatest strength are the distance throws.
Career
Charles Smith began his career at the University of New Mexico , with which he played three seasons in the NCAA . In the 1997 NBA Draft , Miami Heat selected him in the first round (No. 26), but swapped him in the middle of the following season for Brent Barry , of the Los Angeles Clippers . He stayed in California for another season and finally moved to the CBA at Rockford Lightning in 1999 .
In 2000, Charles Smith finally decided to move to Europe, where he was the second best scorer in the Italian league with Snaidero Udine . He then returned to the NBA, where he played one season each with the San Antonio Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers . In 2003, after a short stopover at the Greek club Makedonikos , he returned to Italy , where he played for Virtus Bologna and Scavolini Pesaro , especially with the latter he attracted attention with his strong performances and won the Alphonso Ford Trophy for the best scorer of the ULEB Euroleague 2004/05 . The Portland Trail Blazers brought him back to the roster in 2005, but traded him to the Denver Nuggets during the season . In the latter, he played only one game before he went abroad again, this time to the Turkish club Efes Pilsen Istanbul . Real Madrid signed him in the summer of 2006 , with whom he promptly won the ULEB Cup and was elected MVP of the final. On June 19, 2008 he got another contract with Efes Pilsen Istanbul. In the 2008/09 season he succeeded in winning the championship, the cup and the President's Cup with the Turks. In the summer of 2010, Smith moved to the Lega Basket Serie A for Virtus Roma .
