Drew Nicholas (born May 17, 1981 in Hempstead , New York ) is a retired American basketball player who played on the position of shooting guard .

Career

Nicholas began playing basketball at Long Island Lutheran High School in New York . In 1999 he moved to the University of Maryland , where he was active for four years and was able to win the NCAA championship in 2002 . In 2003 he was elected 59th in the USBL Drafts by the Texas Rim Rockers, but moved to the Italian club Fabriano Basket that same year . After further positions at Basket Livorno, the Spanish top club TAU Vitoria and Benetton Treviso , with whom Nicholas was able to win his first title in Europe, he switched to the Turkish first division club Efes Pilsen in the summer of 2006 as the reigning top scorer of the ULEB Euroleague . With Efes Nicholas won the Turkish Cup in his first season, but fell out of favor with his employer when he and three other American teammates refused to play a Euroleague game at Partizan Belgrade . Nicholas justified his decision with the political unrest after Kosovo's declaration of independence and the recommendation of the United States Department of Foreign Affairs to avoid Serbia as a travel destination. From 2008 to 2011 Nicholas was under contract with the Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens .
