Joan Plaza i Durán (born December 26, 1963 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish basketball coach . He has been under contract with Unicaja Málaga since 2013 .

Career

Joan Plaza began his career as a coach at the EB Betsaida basketball school, which he and his brother founded . At the same time he worked for the women's team at EB Santísima Trinitat and for the small club CB Sant Adriá . In 1995 he finally moved to Joventut de Badalona as a junior coach, where he remained both in youth and as assistant coach of the first team until 2004. He celebrated his greatest success in the 2000/01 season when he won the Spanish U20 championship. In the summer of 2004, Joan Plaza moved to Real Madrid at the request of the new coach Božidar Maljković . When the Serb was finally sacked in 2006, after a disappointing season, Joan Plaza took over the post of head coach for the first time. Real Madrid won their first thirteen league games in a row that season, setting Plaza a new record for a manager in his freshman year. Internationally, he won the ULEB Cup and, as only the third coach in the history of Spanish basketball, the Spanish championship in his debut year.
