Ergin Ataman (born January 7, 1966 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish basketball player and currently coach of Anadolu Efes SK and from March 2014 head coach of the Turkish national team .

Career as a player

He began his career as a player in 1978 at Eczacıbaşı and continued it at Yeşilyurt.

Career as a coach

Beginnings

Ataman started his coaching career in the youth department of Eczacıbaşı and moved to Efes Pilsen in 1990 . There, too, he initially worked in the youth field, but was appointed assistant coach to Aydın Örs in the 1991-1992 season . In 1996 Ataman was able to win the Korać Cup , the third most important European basketball cup at the time, with the team . After this season he moved to Türk Telekom and was able to secure second place in the league and thus a starting place in the Euroleague in his first season . At the European Championship in 1997 he worked as an assistant coach for the Turkish national team.

In the 1998-1999 season he did not coach a team. Instead, he devoted himself to theoretical study of basketball at Stanford University in the United States .

First successes as head coach

After only a few weeks of employment with Pınar Karşıyaka , Ataman was brought back to Efes Pilsen for the 1999-2000 season. This time he got the post of head coach. This season he and his team made it into the final four of the Euroleague. In the next season, Efes Pilsen won the Turkish Presidential Cup . In February 2001 Ataman left the association and was replaced by Oktay Mahmuti .

Ataman decided to continue his career in Europe and from 2001 coached the Italian club Montepaschi Siena . In 2002 he won the Saporta Cup with Siena and won both the first trophy for the Tuscan club and the most important trophy of his coaching career to date. In the next season he succeeded again in the Final Four. For the 2003-2004 season, the Istanbul moved back to his home country and trained Ülkerspor for three years . There he won the Turkish and the President's Cup twice .

Second coaching position in Italy and return to Turkey

In November 2006 Ataman moved again to Italy. This time he was hired by Climamio Bologna .

But a year later he returned to his hometown and from then on trained Beşiktaş Cola Turka . 2007-2008 Beşiktaş was able to complete the normal season as leaders. The championship could not be won, however, as they were eliminated in the play-offs. Ataman was also successful in Europe this season. In the ULEB Cup , they were only eliminated in the quarter-finals against the other Turkish representative Galatasaray , after having confidently finished the group stage with ten wins as the championship leader.

Ataman celebrated his first championship in 2009 with Efes Pilsen, to which he had returned a year earlier. In the same season he won the Turkish Cup. In 2010 he was brought back from Beşiktaş. In 2012 he achieved the sensation and surprisingly won the championship. It was the first for the traditional Istanbul club in 37 years. He also won the EuroChallenge that same season, making him the first Turkish coach to win his second European title. For the next season, Ataman moved to city rivals Galatasaray Liv Hospital and was able to win the championship again by beating Banvitspor in the final of the play-offs .

Turkish national team

In March 2014, Ataman was appointed head coach of the Turkish national basketball team. It was announced that he would coach the team for three years. The Turkish national team was without a head coach for 190 days until Ataman took office after Bogdan Tanjević announced his resignation after the 2013 European Championship .
