Division
Split is an outdated term for increasing the contrast of an image. A steeper gradation curve makes the lights brighter and the shadows blacker. The tonal range (difference between the lightest and darkest point) remains unaffected.
In the darkroom, the division could be achieved by copying on photographic material with greater contrast, but also by using hard-working developer fluid . In printing technology, the division was realized through the use of special printing films .
term
The name comes from the fact that the gradation makes the shape of a gradation curve steeper. This term was primarily used for photographic work in the darkroom or in printing technology during print preparation .
