Garraf is a low mountain range and is half in the Comarqua Garraf and half in the Comarqua Baix Llobregat in Catalonia.
location
The Garraf Mountains extend over a length of 26.5 km and cover an area of 9,967 hectares . The triangle-shaped massif borders the Llobregat valley to the east , the fertile Penedès plain to the north and west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south . It is part of the Catalan Coastal Mountains .
traffic
For centuries the mountains, like a natural barrier, hindered trade on the land routes between Barcelona and the Comarqua Garraf. It was only with the construction of the Barcelona - Sitges railway line (1888) and the construction of a toll motorway (1994), both with long tunnels, that the movement of people and goods became easier.
geology
The karst mountain range with its round hills and deeply eroded valleys consists of calcareous rock. Numerous caves have formed over the millennia. The highest peaks are the Morella (594 m) and the Rascler (572 m). To the Mediterranean coast it forms a steeply sloping coast with small bathing bays.
fauna and Flora
There are two nature parks in the mountains of the Garraf. The Garraf nature park with 123.8 km² and the smaller nature park Olérdola . The fauna and flora have adapted to this dry landscape without surface water . Different species of birds including the Bonelli's eagle and numerous reptiles such as turtles and lizards are native here. The low vegetation with agaves , opuntia and dwarf palms is repeatedly crossed by pine forests . Further inside the mountains you can find holm oaks and pines .
