Montserrat [ munsəˈrat ] ( Catalan for 'Sawn Mountain') is a sandstone mountainthat rises abruptly, 1200 meters high, from the hilly hinterland of the Catalan capital Barcelona in Spain . It is part of the Serralada Prelitoral Catalana ('Catalan Pre-Coast Mountains').

Below the eastern summit is the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat with the famous boys' choir l'Escolania de Montserrat . The Montserrat mountain is one of the landmarks of Catalonia. From the monastery (720 meters) there are several well-designed paths to the highest peak, the Sant Jeroni at 1236 meters.

Besides the winding road from the valley of the Llobregat performs one of Adolf Bleichert & Co. Built in 1930 and opened cable car ( aerial tramway ) and since 2003 again a cog railway ( Montserrat Rack Railway ) from Monistrol de Montserrat directly to the monastery. From there, two funiculars lead 250 meters up to the summit of Sant Joan (since 1917) and down to the monumental rosary (since 1929), whose first glorious secret was designed by Antoni Gaudí and which leads to Santa Cova , the holy cave , the legendary place of discovery of the miraculous image of Montserrat , the Romanesque black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia since 1880.

The smaller monasteries of St. Benedict of Nursia and St. Cecilia of Rome are scattered over the mountain range, which is about 10 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide . The latter was first mentioned in documents in 945 and still has a Romanesque church from the 11th century as well as numerous, mostly dilapidated hermitages .

The Montserrat cannot be seen from Barcelona as the Tibidabo and the surrounding Serra de Collserola mountain range block the view.
