The great Conrady . The book of German poems. From the beginning to the present is the standard anthology of German-language poetry published by Karl Otto Conrady .

Content and structure

"The Great Conrady" presents around 2500 poems by around 650 authors and thus "German-language poetry in its full range - from the beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present day". After the prefaces, a 60-page table of contents provides the "authors and their poems" (including bio and bibliographical information), which is followed by the actual collection of poems on pages 93 to 1325. The chapter "Explanations of words and facts", "Headings and beginnings of poems" and "Alphabetical list of authors" conclude the total of 1378 pages.

In its latest edition from 2008, more than half of the work is poems from the 20th century.

Edition history

In 1977 Karl Otto Conrady presented the first edition of his collection with poems from the beginning to the present. The Wessobrunn prayer introduces the anthology, poems by Erich Arendt are at the end. In 1991 "The Great German Poem Book" appeared in a significantly reduced version: A poem by Ulrich von Hutten (around 1500) marks the beginning, the poetry by Kerstin Hensel concludes the overview. In 2000, "The New Conrady" returned to the original edition principle, again offering poems from the beginnings in the Middle Ages and expanding the proportion of contemporary poems by several hundred pages. In 2008, the collection is expanded to include poems by 51 younger contemporary authors who appeared between 2000 and 2007.
