Maxie Wander (born January 3, 1933 in Vienna as Elfriede Brunner ; † November 21, 1977 in Potsdam ) was an Austrian writer.

Life

Maxie Wander was born into a communist family in the Viennese workers' district of Hernals , the 17th district. She should have been the first in her family to take the Matura (the Austrian school leaving certificate, which corresponds to the German Abitur ), but left school at the age of 17. Without any professional training, she earned her living as a secretary, photographer, journalist and screenwriter .

From 1958 until her death in 1977 she lived with her husband, the Austrian writer Fred Wander , in what was then the GDR in Kleinmachnow near Berlin . The couple had three children: a daughter who died in 1968, a son and an adopted son. Maxie Wander was involved as a co-author of several travel reports of her husband and also wrote screenplays, for example in 1976 for the film A City is Born Like a Child , which was directed by Günter Jordan and was later banned in the GDR.

Her most important work appeared the following year: Good morning, you beautiful. Logs on tape . In it she lets women of different social origins and different ages talk about their everyday experiences, feelings and wishes. Christa Wolf wrote the foreword for the West German edition of Guten Morgen, du Schöne ; later it was also included in the GDR editions. The book was particularly successful in the GDR, but also in West Germany, and saw numerous editions. The genre of protocol literature also became popular in the GDR through Wander, although her book was not the first of its kind. As early as 1973, Sarah Kirsch published five uncoated stories from the cassette recorder , as Kirsch called her book The Panther Woman in the subtitle (and Erika Runge's Bottrop Protocols in 1968 in the FRG ). In 1978 a stage version of Guten Morgen, du Schöne premiered at the Deutsches Theater Berlin .

The television of the GDR produced nine television films based on Guten Morgen, du Schöne , whereby three episodes by the director Hans-Werner Honert were banned from performance so that they could only be shown after the fall of the Wall . The other three episodes of Vera Loebner (recorded with electronic television cameras) and Thomas Langhoff (recorded with 16 mm film cameras) were broadcast in 1979 and 1980.

Maxie Wander contracted cancer in 1976 and passed away the following year. In Kleinmachnow, Berlin-Hellersdorf, Dresden and Potsdam a Maxie-Wander-Straße commemorates them. In 2018, a street in Vienna's 22nd district in Seestadt Aspern was named after her.
